sometimes the limitations of the camera works in your favour. it wasn't my intention to bleach out the sky but this is how it turned out. I like to think it gives the slight impression of a japanese print.

Sky is one of the hardest things to capture on a digital camera especially.. hard time with tonal ranges and contrasts and exposure.

That's why sometimes I go into my sky folder and slide in any old sky into the void of white. In this case I don't think it would have looked half as good as yours does anyway.

I agree it works as a Japanese print. Only thing missing is the lettering.

sometimes i'm indoors and i get an itch to take photos - anything, really. i usually end up wandering around the garden - like a teddy bea...eh?

(sorry, i had a moment of childhood regression there!)

...around the garden taking photos of grass, washing lines, the garage, anything! it was one of those days and these are the trees at the front of our house.

anne, yes i have been frustrated taking bright sky and foreground without compromising either.

i wonder if you would use lens filters to reduce glare?

That is very good!

What camera did you use and what mode was it on?

finlay, i'll have to confess i don't know - it's just a point & shoot canon ixus400; I'm gearing up for an SLR very soon.

all I can say is it's set for the 'very best quality' setting (big file size!) and I've taken it off the preset 'average' 9-spot focus metering to centre spot metering, which I can better control by the two-stage shutter release.
