The first thing I come across after leaving the car is yet another critter!
The Windrush is a sprightly little river; the swan's graceful demeanor belies the fact that it's legs are going ninteen to the dozen just to stay in the same place. As long as they don't kid themselves they can actually fly, swans are the epitome of avian cool.

This is a fine shot. The water almost looks like volcanic rock. It looks hard and cold (and to you or I, swimming in it in January would probably feel like that!)
It did look cold! Once, as a boy scout learning to canoe, I had to prove I could swim at least 50 yards - in the Thames, in March! That was bad enough. It was incredibly green below the surface, I remember...
